Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) absorb heat from the outside air which is then used to heat radiators, under floor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home.

Air Source Heat Pumps are very efficient, for every unit of electricity used to power the pump, 3-4 units of thermal energy are produced and as the heat they extract is taken from the air, the energy source is essentially infinite making air sourced heat pumps a viable alternative to traditionally powered central heating systems.

There are two types of air source heating systems;

  • An air-to-water system distributes heat via your wet central heating system. Heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. So they are more suitable for under floor heating systems or larger radiators, which give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time.
  • An air-to-air system produces warm air, which is then circulated to heat the building With an Air Source Heat Pump you could save a considerable amout of money, the total savings are dependent on your current heat distribution system, fuel costs and old heating system but could potentially reach around £1000 a year.

How Does it work

  1. In the same way that a fridge uses refrigerant to extract heat from the inside, keeping your food cool, an air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and uses it to heat your home and hot water. Using established refrigeration technology, air source heat pumps use the heat from the ambient air by compressing it to increase its temperature.

  2. The heat then held in the refrigerant is passed via a heat exchanger to either under floor or traditional radiator heat emitters and distributed around the building. ASHP’s can extract useful heat from air at temperatures as low as up to -20°C.
